Symposium 1392

A new book coming soon: Wingfield College and the Dukes of Suffolk, based on the 1362 Wingfield History Symposium...

In 2012 Wingfield College and church celebrated  their 650th anniversary. Now a book is being published, to record the academic symposium, and to cover the latest research into Wingfield, the de la Poles, and chantry colleges. It will include digital reconstructions of the college and Wingfield castle. Click HERE for more details about the book, and HERE for information about last year's symposium.

Wingfield College opens as part of the Invitation To View Scheme. The guided tour (led by the owners) explains all about the history and architecture of the building. It also describes the many historical characters connected with the house, including the founder Sir John Wingfield, The Black Prince, Henry VIII's sister Mary, Charles Brandon, and the turbulent lives of the famous De La Poles - the mediaeval Dukes of Suffolk who lived (and died violently) during the Hundred Years War and the Wars of the Roses. The tour includes a visit to Wingfield Church, alongside the College, to see the spectacular De La Pole tombs.

The tour lasts approximately 2 and a half to 3 hours and includes tea, coffee and home-made cakes. There is then the opportunity to explore the beautiful gardens and woods on your own, so do allow plenty of time. There are also public footpaths to follow across the fields, and of course the local pub to check out... (see below)

Click here for some pictures of the gardens during different seasons.

The cost is £14 including tea and home-made cakes. Please note that places on these tours must be booked in advance - you cannot just turn up on the day (there won't be enough cake...).

To book, please call the Mercury Theatre ticketline on 01206 573948 or book on-line at www.mercurytheatre.co.uk.

The De la Pole Pub in Wingfield:

Before or after your visit why not have a drink or lunch at our successful and popular village pub: the De La Pole Arms. Just opposite the church, a few yards from the College, so not far to walk. Sit outside with a view of the churchyard, or inside by a log fire. For more details and reservations call the pub on 01379 384 545. Help us keep our local open...
